Plot Summary

The film follows the journey of Prince Siddhartha, who is born in the kingdom of Kapilavastu to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya. He is prophesied by the sage Asita to become either a great king or a great spiritual leader. His father tries to shield him from the sufferings of the world and provides him with a luxurious life. He marries his cousin Princess Yasodhara and has a son named Rahula. However, he becomes restless and curious about the outside world and decides to leave the palace with his charioteer Channa. He encounters four sights that change his perspective: an old man, a sick man, a dead man and a monk. He realizes the impermanence and unsatisfactoriness of life and renounces his worldly pleasures. He joins a group of ascetics led by Uddaka Ramaputta and practices severe austerities for six years. He then realizes that this is not the way to enlightenment and abandons the extreme practices. He sits under a Bodhi tree and meditates until he attains enlightenment and becomes the Buddha. He then travels to Sarnath and delivers his first sermon to his former companions, who become his first disciples. He also reunites with his father, wife and son, who join his sangha (community). He spends the rest of his life teaching the Dhamma (the truth) to all who seek liberation from suffering.
